Yaoundé  is the capital of Cameroon and, with a population of approximately 2.5 million, the second largest city in the country after the port city Douala. It lies in the centre of the nation at an elevation of about 750 metres (2,500 ft) above sea level .the capital of the central region and the Mfoundi sub-division.Yaoundé houses most of the most important institutions in Cameroon. Local people nicknamed the city Ngola, which comes from the former name of cameroon , Ongola, meaning "fence" in ewondo and refers to the wall of the former German. Thenational meseum of cameroon is located in the city of yaounde. Built inthe colonial era, the building that houses the current national meseum was first use as a residence for the major Hans Dominik, who for several year was a German postman in Cameroon under German protectorate.In 1960, after the independence of Cameroon, it is taken like residence by Ahmadou Ahidjo, 1st president of Cameroon. It was in 1988, under the initiative of the 2nd president of the republic of Cameroon Paul Biya that it is christened national museum
